The day we told her that her family had the right to be in the <strong>subsidized health insurance system<\/strong> Without paying a single peso, she remained silent for a long time. She didn&#039;t know. Like her, thousands of Colombian families have the right and don&#039;t use it simply due to lack of information.<\/p>\n<p>In short: the subsidized health insurance system is the one through which the government pays for healthcare for families who cannot afford to contribute. There are no fees to enroll; you simply need to be classified in the Sisb\u00e9n system in the lowest income brackets, or belong to a protected population, and choose a Health Promoting Entity (EPS). Here we explain who is eligible and how to enroll step by step.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the subsidized health insurance system and who is eligible?<\/h2>\n<p>The healthcare system in Colombia has two doors. One is for those who have a job or income to contribute to: this is the contributory system. The other is for families without that ability to pay, and this is where the subsidized healthcare system operates, financed with public funds so that no one is left without care due to lack of money.<\/p>\n<p>People classified by the Sisb\u00e9n system in the lowest income groups (groups A and B, and part of group C, according to current regulations) are eligible, provided they are not contributing to the contributory pension system. Special populations protected by the State due to their circumstances are also eligible without needing to be registered in Sisb\u00e9n: indigenous communities, victims of the armed conflict, the homeless, people with disabilities without resources, and others included in census lists. Knowing your classification clearly prevents you from becoming a member only to be turned away due to information that could have been verified beforehand.<\/p>\n<h2>How to enroll in the subsidized health insurance program step by step?<\/h2>\n<p>The process is free and, for the most part, you can do it online. Here are the steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Check your classification in the Sisb\u00e9n.<\/strong> Confirm that you are in a group that qualifies for the subsidy before starting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>I chose the EPS.<\/strong> See which ones operate the subsidized healthcare system in your municipality and compare their network of nearby hospitals and health centers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sign up.<\/strong> You can do it online through the Transactional Affiliation System at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miseguridadsocial.gov.co\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">miseguridadsocial.gov.co<\/a>, or in person at the EPS office or at the health department of your municipality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep the record.<\/strong> Once you&#039;re a member, keep the receipt; you can use it to book appointments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After signing up, it&#039;s a good idea to confirm that the system registered you correctly. If you lost your formal employment and can no longer contribute to the system, you can switch from the contributory to the subsidized system through what the system calls mobility, usually without changing your EPS if your current one operates both systems. The right to health is not lost due to job loss.<\/p>\n<p>If you appear as withdrawn or not affiliated and believe it&#039;s a mistake, don&#039;t delay: contact your EPS (Health Promoting Entity) or the health department to reactivate your affiliation. While this is being resolved, no hospital can deny you initial care in an emergency. The important thing is to regularize your situation so you can schedule appointments and treatments without problems.<\/p>\n<h2>Does the subsidized system cover the same things as the contributory system?<\/h2>\n<p>This is the question that brings the most relief to families when we answer it: yes. In Colombia, the health benefits plan is the same for both systems, so a member of the subsidized system is entitled to the same consultations, tests, surgeries, and medications as a contributor.
